More than a quarter (26%) of UK adults regularly wear gym clothes when they are not exercising, according to new research1 from sports and entertainment group R3 Sport.

A third (33%) of people admit that over the past two years they have started wearing clothes suited for the gym more even when they are not working out. Of those that have adopted this trend, nearly three-quarters (73%) say it is because gym wear is more comfortable. This is followed by 35% who believe it suits their lifestyle better and 34% who consider activewear to be more fashionable.

The study commissioned by R3 Sport, which invests in the sports and entertainment sectors with a particular focus on padel tennis, found more than one in five (22%) people regularly go to the gym to exercise. However, of these, 28% admit to attending in gym wear despite having no plans to exercise.

Furthermore, two out of five (40%) gym goers say they arrive at and leave the gym wearing activewear. This compares to 32% who “always” change once at the gym and then again when they leave, and 27% who say they “usually” do this.

In an average day, 44% say they wear gym clothes for up to an hour before or after leaving the gym. Nearly a third (29%) of gym goers wear activewear for one to two hours, whilst 15% say they are usually in gym wear for two to three hours before or after a workout.

This trend is set to continue as 11% of UK adults predict they will wear gym clothing more often over the next two years. More than half (54%) don’t expect to see a change in the amount of time they spend in gym wear, whilst 14% say they may wear gym clothing more often depending on fashion.

Jonathan Rowland, co-founder and chairman of R3 Sport said:

Be it on the school run, at work or even out for dinner, activewear as everyday wear is becoming increasingly popular. Our research shows that gym wear is no longer reserved for the treadmill as more people consider their gym clothes part of their everyday wardrobe.

Activewear now comes in a huge variety of choice in fabric, colour and design, leading to people feeling more comfortable in their workout gear and as such, they are choosing to wear it even when they’re not exercising.”

R3 Sport, through its partnerships with MRH Sport Ltd, has signed an exclusive distribution deal with Bullpadel to sell their merchandise in the UK & Ireland. This also involves brand sponsorship for R3 athletes.
