Figleaves sees sales of ‘sexy lingerie’ up by 46% and prepares for coronavirus baby boom

Figleaves.com have seen a 100% increase in people searching for ‘sexy lingerie’ and a 46% rise in category sales globally within the last month, rising to 66% in the UK alone. According to Lovethesales.com, the UK is also in the top 10 list of countries with highest demand increase for bedroom toys (72% increase in April 2020 vs April 2019).

Jenni Burt, Head of Figleaves, said: “The 46% rise in sales of our ‘sexy lingerie’ is interesting as sales of our comfortable, wireless lingerie has also increased as consumers seek out comfort whilst being at home. There appears to be three schools of stay at home shoppers: the sporty, the sexy and the slouchy. Figleaves have seen a rise in sales across all of these categories. The 100% rise in the search for sexy lingerie during March is unprecedented as usually we expect it to drop after Valentine’s Day.”

However, as millions of couples across the country go into lockdown in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus, experts are also predicting a large spike in pregnancies. Faced with working from home together and unable to leave the house to go to restaurants, bars, the cinema or gym, it leaves little else for partners to do but get intimate. “There’s a well-documented link between economic crisis and the birth rate and we’re already planning for a bump in maternity and nursing bra sales towards the end of this year,” Jenni adds.

Nine months after Hurricane Sandy hit in 2012, local hospitals reported spikes in birth rates up by 30 percent. And, in 2007 when the county of Gloucestershire suffered historic flooding, the council experienced a large shortage in school places a few years later and had to create 200 extra spots to meet demand. The quick witted on social media have already coined a new term for babies born during the boom, calling them ‘coronnials’ and ‘quaranteens.’
