The bra size booby trap: 9 in 10 women wearing bras that don’t fit them

by Underlines

A new poll of UK women by multi-channel retailer Bravissimo reveals 9 in 10 women changed bra size after being fitting by its expert fitters. The retailer aims to help more women feel supported and empowered to know their right fit and style through providing 7-day a week access to its fitters in-store, over the phone, via Live Chat, via email or by a virtual fitting.

Over half of women wearing bras too small

More women wear bras that are too small, rather than needing to go down a size. According to the poll, the two most common bra fitting issues were that women were wearing a bra either too big in the back (42%) or too small in the cup (46%). In comparison, only 4% of women needed a small cup and 8% of women needed a bigger band size.

Finding a feel-good fit is more than the measurement and which letters and numbers to wear. Instead of tape measures, Bravissimo’s fitters fit by eye, using the current bra women are wearing as a starting point. Bravissimo’s expert fitters ask questions to see how someone feels in their bra and guides them through a wider range of sizes, styles and shapes.

The most commonly asked bra fitting questions

Women’s boobs change for all sorts for reasons such as age, weight and pregnancy, and Bravissimo recommends getting your bra checked every 6 months. Despite this, most women are not getting fittings often enough and this problem has only been made more difficult during the pandemic, with online searches for ‘what bra size am I’ increasing from 14.8k per month to 60.5k in the UK, according to data from Google. To help, Bravissimo asked its customers what their most frequently asked bra-fitting questions were and have put their fitters to the test.

The most common questions include, ‘why does my bra ride up and how can I stop it?’, ‘why does my bra wrinkle around the cups?’ and ‘I have one boob bigger than the other. How do I know which style to go for?’. You can find the answers to these questions on Bravissimo.com.

A unique Zoom experience to finding your feel-good fit

Virtual fittings have allowed more women than ever before to find their perfect fit. To book a virtual fitting, all they need to do is fill out a virtual fitting request and a friendly fitter will send an email to confirm a time and date and share a secure Zoom link.

Once on the call, one of Bravissimo’s fitters will introduce themselves and start the fitting, measuring by eye based on your current bra and answer any questions. Following the session, any styles a customer wishes to try will be sent to them and a follow-up session can be arranged too.

Retail & Customer Director, Caroline Bartlett said: “We’re so pleased to be able to continue supporting women and empowering them to find their feel-good fit through our virtual fitting experience. As well as helping women who regularly get fitted to get their fit checked, it has encouraged and provided an additional route for women to find a bra that helps them feel amazing from the comfort of their own homes, all around the world. The feedback we’ve received from new customers who’ve finally been able to find a bra that not only fits them, that looks great and helps them feel confident too has been amazing.”
