New analysis by engagement ring expert, 77 Diamonds, reveals that in the years since the pandemic, the UK has enjoyed a wedding boom as increasing marriage numbers since 2020 have reversed years of steady decline. And a surge in engagement ring sales suggests that this renewed appetite for weddings is here to stay.

77 Diamonds has studied marriage data from the Office for National Statistics* and found that between 2012 and 2019, the number of annual UK marriages fell from 302,654 to 252,200. In fact, in the three years leading up to 2019, the number of marriages saw uninterrupted decline. Then, as the pandemic hit in 2020 and weddings were placed under tight social distancing restrictions, marriage numbers plummeted to little more than 100,000 over the course of the year.
However, it appears that the pandemic experience has reignited a passion for marriage because, since 2020, marriage rates have increased rapidly. 2021 saw marriages rise to a total of 239,094, and 2022 (latest data available) produced another increase to 284,382 – the highest mark since 2016.
Step up Après-midi – the Bespoke Silk Bridal Commissions for Wedding Morning Rituals. The bespoke bridal commissions come in—each one an exclusive, handcrafted silk creation, designed to reflect the individuality of the bride and the
essence of her wedding day. From St. Moritz to Florence, from Mexico’s ranch to the vineyards of Sicily, Eva Shimanskaya, founder and designer of Après-midi, has worked closely with brides worldwide, curating custom pieces that complement not just their personal style but also the spirit of their destination weddings.

Every design begins with a personal consultation—a one-to-one conversation where Eva uncovers the bride’s vision, the ambiance of the venue, and the unique details of her wedding aesthetic. “A bride’s morning is sacred—it’s the calm before the celebration, filled with emotion, love, and quiet beauty. To be a small part of this moment, crafting something so personal, is an honour and a responsibility I don’t take lightly,” says Eva.
Each Après-midi bridal piece is drawn from scratch and designed exclusively for its wearer. Whether it’s a delicate silk wrap inspired by the Roman sculptures or a feather-detailed pyjamas evoking Swan Lake ballet, every detail is carefully considered. The fit, the flow, the subtle elegance —all tailored to complement the bride’s vision, while allowing her to move, breathe, and feel effortlessly beautiful in those private hours before the wedding.

Each piece is meticulously handcrafted from 100% eco-friendly, non-toxic plant-dyed mulberry silk, ensuring that sustainability and luxury go hand in hand.
