Founded five years ago by Brit Sara Cohen, the sustainable swimwear brand offers comfort, beauty, environmentally friendly credentials (the fabric is made from recycled plastic bottles), and crucially, sun safety.
Sara created Hakinakina (a Maori word meaning Enjoy Sport) after she recovered from breast cancer and couldn’t find swimwear for an active lifestyle that also offered the protection she needed to cover her radiation burns. She has since been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 breast cancer which has spread to her lungs and bones, and so the need for protective swimwear so Sara can continue her active lifestyle while protecting herself is even greater. She is focusing on the here and now, building a legacy through her swimwear brand, and using the income to finance her treatment.
The swimwear brand encapsulates both care for the planet and the wearer:
The swimsuits are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. The manufacture process emits fewer greenhouse gases than traditional fabric, uses waterless printing, and is powered purely by green solar energy.All the packaging is plastic free and 100% recyclable or compostable;
The labels and tags are also plastic free and 100% recyclable or compostable;
The pieces are designed to be timeless and versatile, made to outlast fashion trends and made to order to ensure they go to a happy home. The brand also accepts worn out items back in return for a discount on the next purchase, and they will recycle old items. Available in sizes 8-16 garments include long and short sleeved sun tops, sun short, sunsuits and bottoms with prices starting at approximately £80.
