Suzy Says: Map It Out — Why a Crazy Brain Needs a Plan!

by Underlines

This is the third in our series on how to build a successful product line from the ground up. So far, we’ve covered getting clear on your big idea and starting to shape it into something real. Now we’re tackling one of the most important—but often overlooked—steps in the process: creative clarity.

That’s where the Concept Mind Map comes in.

Over time, my team and I developed this tool to help our clients connect the dots between their brand’s essence and how that translates into actual design choices. It’s basically a brain dump with direction—a way to make sense of all the ideas swirling around in your head and start making strategic choices that support your brand identity. Even without our template, you can start now: fold a blank page down the middle and jot emotional words on one side (the mood, the vibe, the story), and tangible elements on the other (colors, fabrics, shapes, and details). The goal isn’t perfection—it’s clarity.

Why it works

There’s real power in getting ideas out of your head and onto the page. Studies back it up: writing things down helps clarify your thinking and spark creative connections you might not see otherwise. The Mind Map takes that a step further by guiding you to separate the emotional from the tangible.

For example, let’s say your brand is all about optimism, casual style, and brightness. Emotionally, that might mean keywords like “uplifting,” “easygoing,” and “playful.” On the tangible side, it’s unlikely you’d use dark, moody color palettes or hyper-minimal silhouettes. Instead, you might explore saturated but cheerful tones, unexpected fabric combos, or witty details—like a hidden graphic or an irreverent label on the inside of a bra band.

How to use it

Think of this tool as a living document. You can (and should) return to it at multiple points in your product journey—whether you’re launching your very first line or refreshing a best-selling style with a new capsule. It helps ensure that every detail—down to the button choices or stitching lines—supports the emotional core of your brand.

Most importantly, the Concept Mind Map helps creatives move from “I know it when I see it” to “I know it because I mapped it.” And in this business, clarity is power.
