With so much anxiety surrounding the Covid-19 outbreak and self-isolation or lockdown a real possibility, the stress and uncertainty makes this a very challenging time for everyone. It’s therefore never been more important to look after yourself and remain both physically and mentally healthy. Exercise can help to flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways and boost your immune system – your body’s defensive against infections – as well as helping relieve stress and boost your overall mood. Here’s some tips on how to keep exercising without leaving the house:
- Workout outdoors: If you’ve got a garden, balcony or deck, make this your new workout space. Breathe in the fresh air or even catch a few rays.
- No equipment, no problem: Don’t have workout equipment at home? Don’t worry – just use what you’ve got. There’s also plenty of exercises you can do that don’t require any equipment at all. Focus on the basics such as planks, star jumps, lunges, burpees, sit ups and push ups for a high intensity workout that will build strength and get your heart rate up without the use of any equipment.
- Keep it clean: Wash towels regularly and disinfect your yoga mat or any equipment after use particularly if they’re being used by other family members.
- Get an app: There are thousands of workout apps to choose from that focus on at-home workouts and some are offering free trials for an extended period due to the Covid-19 outbreak. An app or training program will help you focus your workout and get the most out of it. Here are some simple at-home exercises from Olympian Melissa Wu to get you started.
- Get in the water!Leisure centres, public pools and hotels may be closing temporarily, but a quick dip in the sea, or open-water swimming in a clear lake, is still a possibility if you live nearby and stay 2 metres away from another swimmer. Swimming is not only a full-body workout but it’s great for the mind too. It’s low impact and suitable for people of all ages – if you’re lucky enough to have your own pool, make it part of your daily routine.
