This Friday we chat with Katie Weir who has packed in more than a lifetime’s experience in underwear and bra fitting already. Her energy and passion is evident and her pace is non-stop!
So where did it all start?
I started washing up in a café at age 11, and that built my work ethic. After university, I worked as the PR and Social Media Assistant for Wacoal; this job sparked my passion for lingerie, and for this, I am forever grateful.
I then moved over to Tutti Rouge as their PR and Marketing Manager, a short but sweet stint before I was headhunted by franchise company Alshaya, which took me to Kuwait where I headed up the PR and social media for American Eagle Outfitters MENA. My time in the Middle East and in the apparel industry taught me that my love and passion for lingerie could not be dampened. Every conversation I had would always lead back to lingerie, so I decided to return to the UK and set up my own bra-fitting business, ‘Weir Wonderful Fit’. While doing bra fittings every week in my spare room and at events such as the ‘Curve Fashion Festival’, I was selling Curvy Kate and Scantilly lingerie under ‘Weir Wonderful Fit’ for a year. Then I moved into a PR and Content Manager position with the brand.
I spent five amazing years with Curvy Kate, spearheading campaigns, content, and influencer relationships. I loved every moment working for the brand, but I knew that it was my time to move on and discover what else the world has for me. In March, I left the business to go freelance, and since then, I have been working on corporate bra fitting days, offering virtual bra fittings to women around the world, creating educational content, and collaborating with lingerie brands!
Why intimate apparel?
Plagued by bra issues as a fuller-bust teen, I had to do a lot of research to find the best bras for me, and this is when I discovered Freya. Studying International Fashion Marketing at Manchester Met, I had the opportunity to take a year in the industry. I was lucky enough to get a place with Eveden Ltd (now Wacoal), and I fell in love with lingerie and that feeling of transforming a woman’s confidence through a bra fitting. I have worked with most of the market-leading fuller-bust brands throughout my career, and the intimate apparel industry is just so loving and nurturing!
What is different about working in this sector?
The difference in this sector is that it is ‘intimate’; it is so much more than just an item of clothing. Especially working a lot on the bra fitting side of the industry, you get to see what an amazing impact a perfectly fitting bra can have on someone’s life. There is something so magical about lifting a person’s spirits, bust, and confidence through a bra fitting. The intimacy of the fitting room, the Zoom call—these moments are what I love the most. Building rapport, boosting self-esteem, and making someone see their true beauty in the here and now is something that I will never stop loving!
Where do you get your ideas for your business?
Inspiration is all around me, through conversations with women at the gym, my friends, scrolling on social media, and my lived experiences! Being a PR professional, I love to be reactive and keep my finger on the pulse. This is one of the most exciting parts of my role, as you can turn something small into a moment. With every post I put out on social media, I want to motivate, inspire, and educate. I love to share my bra fitting knowledge, as I know how helpful it is. These ideas come from my following and also from what I wish I knew before getting into the industry!
A typical week?
Every Monday starts with a 6:30am gym class. I do Metcon followed by a lift session. This start to the week makes me feel alive; it grounds me for the week ahead and offers gratitude for the body that I have. As I work with people a lot, I give a lot of energy, so it is important for me to nurture my own body and ensure that my cup is full (no pun intended).
From this class, I write down my to-do list for the week and take a quick look at my vision board, which keeps me on track to my dreams. My diary is full of virtual bra fitting appointments three days a week. I love to do these over Zoom as I can reach so many women in every corner of the world!
As I live outside of London, I like to spend one day a week in the big city meeting up with my little pink book of contacts and maintaining my relationships. I often tie this in with something creative, like an art exhibition or influencer event, to ensure that my time is used wisely!
I work at Jigsaw one day a week, and I love to keep up with fashion trends, be immersed in luxury high street wear, and impart my knowledge to customers who come in for a dress but just don’t have the correct bra! I love human contact, so this day is always a confidence and energy boost for me!
I always dedicate hours of each day to creating content. It can get messy trying on outfits, bras, and makeup, so there is always a big clean-up operation after, which usually ends in a Vinted upload as I find things I haven’t worn in years!
As I am still new to freelance life, I am building relationships, getting my brand out there, and testing the waters with what works! It is a very exciting time for me – a Weir Wonderful time, in fact!
Whom do you admire in the underwear industry?
I recently walked the LCF Contour Fashion Show for Ellie Gabbutt, a student who dared to do a fuller-bust lingerie collection while the rest of her year did sample size 34B. I admire this attitude, dedication, and desire to make beautiful lingerie for the fuller bust. There are so many amazing people working in the underwear industry, but I want to show my biggest support and admiration for those who are taking the chance to shake it up, bring fresh ideas, and push boundaries!
Which social media is your go-to – any favourites?
Personally, I have learned a lot from TikTok in terms of life skills, style hacks, and recipes! I find the app a bit of a comfort blanket—before I go to bed, I must watch the latest Nara Smith video almost like a lullaby!
In my career, social media has always posed a challenge when working in lingerie, especially with the ‘community guidelines’, as it can be very easy to go against them when you are promoting products. This can be hugely frustrating, but you must just keep pushing through, sending those appeals, and wearing those nipple covers.
Any other ambitions for Weir Wonderful?
My main mission for Weir Wonderful is to ensure that everyone who wears a bra feels comfortable, confident, and educated in their choices.
I would love to educate teens in school as I think a lot of our confidence is built and broken at this age. I want to bolster self-esteem with lessons around putting on a bra correctly, understanding the styles available, and focusing on sports, as I have a personal story around this.
My dream is to have a regular TV segment educating the world on the importance of bra fitting. I want to make this fun, inspiring, and educational—we shouldn’t feel embarrassed to talk about bras, as the majority of women wear one, so we need to make sure it works for us!
Proudest moment to date?
I have so many proud moments in my career! As I evolve through my career, so do my campaigns, my ideas, and my confidence in my abilities. A stand-out campaign is Icon for Scantilly by Curvy Kate; this was a campaign I took from conception to execution alongside the team, and the outcome exceeded my expectations! I will always look back at the content and be very proud of what we created.
Worst move so far?
Under-selling myself.
Time out?
Gym, walking in the countryside, and dancing in the kitchen!
Pet hate?
London coffee. It never tastes as great as in the Midlands – is it the water? Is it the coffee beans?
