World’s first rehab centre for people addicted to Amazon to open this week

iZettle opens the world’s first Giant Corp Rehab Centre, a place that provides online shopping addicts with therapy aimed to curb people’s ‘buy it now’ shopping habits and encourages consumers to shop locally and support independent businesses.

New research conducted by fintech company iZettle shows one in three Brits believe they are ‘addicted’ to online shopping and ‘one-click’ buys from giant retailers, with one in twelve admitting to making purchases every day.

The research also shows that:

  • The biggest addicts for shopping with online retail giants are in Greater London (39%), West Midlands (37%), Yorkshire (32%), North West (29%) and North East (28%)
  • Almost one in five 24-35 year-olds claim to be ‘addicted’ to online shopping with giant retailers
  • 35% of Brits claim they shop too much through ‘one-click’ buys and repeat purchasing online with giant retailers
  • 42% of Brits claim they shop too much online with giant retailers in general, with 18% shopping two or more times a week

This follows on from experts predicting that the high street crisis could leave 100,000 retail stores empty in the next decade, meaning that on average, a shop could potentially close its doors every hour of every day over the next 10 years. This has prompted iZettle to open a one-of-a-kind ‘rehab’ centre in London to help consumers break free from the snare of the convenient but addictive online retail giants, in a bid to get Brits back on the high street.

The Giant Corp Rehab Centre is open from 10am  to 5:30pm on Friday 12th October and Saturday 13th October in Redchurch Street, Shoreditch.
