Spotted at Pure London last week was the introduction of Kandumathi swimwear to the UK market, designs on the garments are unique to the nature of the Maldives.
In the first year alone, the brand has taken the Maldives by storm – selling to more than twenty luxury resorts with its distinctive flower (Dhiggamma), Kashikeyo (Screwpine) and Crab (Kakuni).
The paintings were drawn by Nadee Rachey and designed into swimsuits by Yasra Jaleel and Ahmed Fauzan. The unusual brand name comes from a traditional Maldivian phrase which embodies the essence of a vulnerable but enduring life, It is Kandu – Ocean and Mathi – in it, meaning “in the ocean” or “at sea.” The company are planning their second collection which is inspired by what put Maldives on the map during ancient maritime trade – cowrie shells. Arab and North African traders sought after these shells as it was used as their currency back then. The inspiration stems from their clear representation of the Maldives’ natural beauty and vulnerability.
The brand is hoping to extend its wholesale operations across Europe in 2018 and 2019.
