{"id":25016,"date":"2018-01-09T15:41:22","date_gmt":"2018-01-09T15:41:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/underlinesmagazine.com\/?p=25016"},"modified":"2021-03-15T12:00:04","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T12:00:04","slug":"unpaid-business-rates-bring-bailiffs-41000-company-owners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/underlinesmagazine.com\/2018\/01\/09\/unpaid-business-rates-bring-bailiffs-41000-company-owners\/","title":{"rendered":"Unpaid business rates bring bailiffs to 41,000 company owners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_25018\" style=\"width: 760px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25018\" class=\"size-full wp-image-25018\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/underlinesmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/shop_closures.jpg?resize=750%2C500&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/underlinesmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/shop_closures.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/underlinesmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/shop_closures.jpg?resize=170%2C113&amp;ssl=1 170w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/underlinesmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/shop_closures.jpg?resize=350%2C233&amp;ssl=1 350w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/underlinesmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/shop_closures.jpg?resize=585%2C390&amp;ssl=1 585w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-25018\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Closed Down Empty Shop On A Town High Street<\/p><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/businessadvice.co.uk\">Business Advice<\/a> an investigation undertaken by ratings advisor Altus Group found that around 41,000 business premises were\u00a0approached by\u00a0debt collectors in the five months\u00a0after 1 April 2017 \u2013 a nine per cent increase compared to the same period in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Following authorisation by a local authority, debt\u00a0enforcement agents\u00a0are able to enter a commercial premises and seize goods to sell at public auction, with the proceeds taken by the council to settle unpaid business rates.<\/p>\n<p>A Freedom of Information (FOI) request raised in the investigation asked local councils to submit details on bailiff enforcement against local businesses, of which 247 authorities responded with data on 1.37m properties.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1 April and 31 August 2017 \u2013 the first five months of the latest business rates regime \u2013 a total of 28,355 commercial properties were referred for bailiff enforcement, according to the FOI request.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on the impact of revaluation since 2017, Alex Probyn, UK business rates president at Altus Group, said even those without increased bills had struggled to keep up payments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>The current, deeply unfair, system of transitional adjustment severely limits the amount by which bills can go down,\u00a0meaning many businesses\u00a0are paying disproportionately high bills\u00a0in locations where\u00a0local economies are underperforming and\u00a0values are falling,\u201d<\/em> Probyn said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201c<em>It goes without saying that now is the time, more than ever, that businesses need to carefully understand their new rates assessment and to check that what they\u2019re being told to pay is indeed accurate and correct<\/em>.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;
